Seven daggers, when inserted into a safe in a cliffside cave wall on Seal Island, will reveal the ancient magic artifact called The Devil’s Trademark. As owners of the daggers are murdered one by one, Detective Carter Holmes tries to prevent the valuable artifact from falling into the hands of Asian mastermind Wang Foo and the mysterious masked Monsieur X.
"Finally finished the last chapter of "The Trail of the Octopus" and what a wild ride it was. This is the first silent serial I purchased from the Serial Squadron and I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would.
The restoration done by Eric is fantastic. For a film that is over 100 years old, the image quality is probably better than what the audience saw in 1919. And for something I wasn't expecting, the use of different colored filters for scene changes really kept the eye entertained and focused on the story. Also, sound effects, like gun fire and the whine of some machines were an added bonus. The musical soundtrack was expertly conducted to match the action on the screen. All of these elements together made this film a joy to watch.
I have to admit that I'm a bit of a nostalgia buff and seeing these images of America 100 years past made me smile. From the vintage outfits worn by the men and women, to those amazing old cars, sleek boats and golden age airplanes and the intricate architectural workmanship of the buildings in town. There was so much to feast on.
The story itself is worthy of a James Bond movie with the action taking place all around the globe. Be ready to be wisked away to places like San Francisco, China and Paris. The main villain, Wang Foo has access to powers that would make a Marvel villain green with envy. In one sequence, one of his evil henchmen was able to deflect an asteroid to crash into a district in Paris. He's also able to move a person's spirit into another body to carry out his evil plans.
The last chapter is wild, and so much fun, and be prepared to have your jaws drop when the identity of Monsieur X is revealed. I did NOT see that one coming.
